Beatrice GalzinThe Arboretum of Saint-Sauveur des Pourcils
Saint-Sauveur-Camprieu
Camprieu, a relaxing holiday destination. Located near Mont Aigoual, it offers beautiful hiking trails, horseback riding, and opportunities to meet a park ranger and discover the local flora and fauna. You can also enjoy relaxing by the lake.
Camprieu, whose village occupies a plateau at an altitude of 1100 meters, is located west of Mont Aigoual, in an area where schist, granite, and limestone coexist: the granite of the Bonheur Valley and its lake, the limestone of the Bramabiau chasm, and the schist of the Trévezel Valley. Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, the largest hamlet in the commune, boasts a beautiful arboretum. Hiking trails allow visitors to explore the region and discover all its charms.
Points of interest:
- The beech tree of Suquet
Its impressive size, dimensions, and age are like a time machine, sparking our imagination. That's its appeal! In any case, it predates the reforestation of the Aigoual massif, which took place at the end of the 19th century under the guidance of forester Georges Fabre and botanist Charles Flahault.
- The Valley of Happiness:
Its lake, its underground river... the loss of happiness! The Happiness Stream rises near the Serreyrède pass. It flows at the bottom of a small valley about five kilometers long, passes by a ruined abbey, before disappearing into the Camprieu plateau. It reappears at the magnificent Bramabiau Abyss, a place to discover with the family.
A marked trail is available in this area: a beautiful 3-hour hike.
- St Sauveur des Pourcils:
St Sauveur des Pourcils, which belongs to the National Forestry Office, is one of the starting points of the St Sauveur des Pourcils arboretum, also called the Trees and Shrubs Trail.
- The tree trail:
Located around the hamlet of St Sauveur des Pourcils, this arboretum enjoys a unique setting: sheltered from the wind and bathed in sunshine, it stretches across a variety of rocky soils: limestone, sandstone, schist, and granite. This allows for the growth of a wide range of tree species and the development of a rich and diverse flora, including shrubs and bushes, which you can try to identify using a game sheet available on site. Among the hundred or so tree species found along the path, some are particularly remarkable.
The lords of the forest: Sequoia, Greek fir, Caucasian fir...
