Les 4000 Marches

The ascent to the roof of the Gard

Can you imagine starting from Valleraugue at 350m altitude and climbing the famous Aigoual mountain, which rises to 1567m? Challenge accepted!

Hiking boots, backpack, and a nice cold water bottle—let's go for a few intense kilometers discovering the exceptional panoramas of the Cévennes. By the way, do you really think there are 4000 steps to climb to reach Mont Aigoual? Think again! There are indeed stairs for just a few meters. This hike takes its name from the steps in front of the church in Valleraugue, where the trail begins.

The start of the hike offers a beautiful view of the village of Valleraugue, located in the Hérault Valley. The Hérault River originates at the foot of Mont Aigoual. After this brief historical stop, we continue our journey!

We hike along a path beneath chestnut forests, catching glimpses of terraced fields. The mountain gradually opens up to reveal grazing lands. A long ridgeline allows us to discover the exceptional landscapes of the Cévennes National Park. Spring is heralded by yellow-flowering broom and verdant meadows. Ouch! We pass through a rocky crevice, a little adventure course where you have to hold your breath!

Farmland, the sound of herds in the distance, an authentic landscape of agropastoralism. Did you know that this territory is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

A refreshing break along a stream before tackling the final climb to the Aigoual observatory – the last bit of sweat! Arriving at the observatory, you're rewarded with a 360° view encompassing Mont Lozère, the Auvergne region, the Mediterranean Sea, and, on a clear day, the Pyrenees and the Alps… This hike is pure magic!
