Thomas SauvéWe met Florence Faidherbe, manager of the Isis campsite in the Cévennes and president of the Cévennes Écotourisme association until 2023. Created in 2001, the association, a pioneer in Europe, aims to unite tourism stakeholders in a remarkable territory, the Cévennes National Park, and to work towards developing a supportive and virtuous approach to tourism.
Can you introduce yourself ?
I have been on the board of directors of the Cévennes Ecotourism association for almost 20 years, and I am currently fortunate enough to chair it. I also manage the Isis campsite in the Cévennes, a family business established nearly 50 years ago. It's a campsite guided by an artistic sensibility and, by its very nature, committed to respecting the environment.
Can you tell us about the Cévennes Écotourisme association and its role?
The Cévennes Ecotourism Association was created over 20 years ago by a group of professionals associated with the Cévennes National Park, with the aim of encouraging tourism stakeholders to sign the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism. The network of members is very dynamic and has given the Cévennes region a significant lead in ecotourism. With the creation of the Cévennes National Park, the Cévennes have always been pioneers in the field of sustainable tourism.
What is the role of this association?
The association offers network support to professionals wishing to actively engage in a continuous improvement process. This is based on a charter framed by two key frameworks: the 17 pillars of sustainable development defined by UNESCO and the ISO 260000 standard (CSR), while maintaining close collaboration with the Cévennes National Park. The association's aim is to encourage professionals to commit to sustainable, responsible, and respectful tourism.
Can you tell us about a structure that has benefited from the help of Cévennes Écotourisme?
All members can benefit from the association, which, through its network and the tools it has created, acts as a catalyst for collective intelligence, influencing the management of our facilities. It's a process of continuous improvement; you can receive support to achieve the national "Esprit Parc" label or other certifications. The association relies on networking, primarily through training, workshops, group purchasing, and, of course, knowledge sharing among members.
Do you have any advice for our visitors on how to enjoy the destination responsibly?
First, I advise them to consider eco-friendly transportation options once they arrive and during their stay, favoring carpooling, hitchhiking, etc. You don't always need to drive to the other side of the region to discover and be amazed. Similarly, when it comes to shopping, I advise them to always support local products, in 99% of cases. Without hesitation, they should choose one of the network's providers for their accommodations or activities; this way, they'll be guaranteed an unforgettable experience in an exceptional setting.
What is your favorite spot in the Southern Cévennes?
The one where I grew up! Where the Mediterranean sun softens our winters and makes myriads of enchanting birds sing all year round. The one of the gentle Cévennes mountains where ancient paths lead us to summits with bluish landscapes and into verdant valleys with refreshing rivers.
