"The Legend of the Three Hermits"

A legend… Three lords, a pretty lord's daughter from the next village… All in love… But alas, Father Bernard chose another path for them!

Like all legends, there are other versions…

The lord of Roquefeuil, Owner of Algues Castle Between Saint-Jean-du-Bruel and Nant, the Dourbie valley dominated. He had three sons. This good man died young and left Guiral, Alban, and Sulpice alone.

Not far from there, Berthe, the pretty daughter of the lord of CantobreShe was of marriageable age. She knew all three of them. But it was difficult to choose! The young men went to see the Abbot to help them with their choices.

The voice of God announces the sentences: the brothers must leave the castle, renounce Berthe and live as hermits in the surrounding mountains.

As for Berthe, she retired to a women's monastery. Her beautiful blond hair was cut before she took the veil and orders.

Before parting ways, the three boys agreed that each year, on the anniversary of the judgment, each of them would light a fire, the only way to signal that they were still there and faithful to the commitment.

But, little by little, the fires went out!

And the mountains took their names.

Mount Guiral rises to 1367 meters in the Lingas massif, its summit crowned by a cross that still overlooks the valley. In 1885, 3000 pilgrims from the surrounding villages made their way to this site on Whit Monday. Saint Guiral is said to be renowned for his miracles. He healed the blind and the crippled, and was a protector of animals. Young women from the region would implore Saint Guiral to find them husbands!

Southwest of Nant, Mount Alban rises to 802 meters. A chapel has been dedicated to this saint. Saint Alban healed the blind. The water from the cistern, located very close to the chapel, was believed to have healing properties for skin and eye problems.

Sulpice, for his part, was at the bottom of the valley, in the Trévezel GorgesHe was supposedly swept away by a major flood and became the master of the waters. During periods of drought, the local population organized a procession on Whit Monday, between Nant and Saint-Sulpice, to pray for rain for the future harvests.
