Beatrice GalzinDiscovery routes of the Aigoual massif
Valleraugue
The village of Valleraugue is nestled in the Hérault valley, at the foot of Mont Aigoual.
With their backpacks on, the hikers begin the climb up the 4000 steps to the summit, at 1567m altitude. From up there, an exceptional view awaits!
Immerse yourself in the history of Valleraugue, whose first houses were built on the banks of the Hérault River in the Middle Ages. This pretty Cévennes village, classified as a Green Resort and Fishing Resort, is the last stronghold before the climb towards Mont Aigoual.
Here, it's a pleasure to lose yourself in the narrow streets and cobbled lanes built into the hillsides, discovering local history and figures like Laurent Angliviel de la Beaumelle and General François Perrier. Its architectural heritage was transformed during the boom in sericulture. At that time, the town boasted no fewer than 17 silk mills! The elegant townhouses along the quayside bear witness to this prosperous era.
Crossing the small, humpbacked bridge offers a chance to admire the river, so gentle and calm in summer. But it is here, in Valleraugue, that impressive floods have historically occurred during the Cévennes episodes. These floods led, at the end of the 19th century, to the reforestation of the Aigoual massif and the construction of the Climatograph - Mont Aigoual Observatory; but that's another story...
