Saint André de Valborgne

Saint-André-de-Valborgne is a village in the upper Gardon valley, located between Mont Aigoual, the Corniche des Cévennes and St Jean du Gard. The village has developed all along the banks of the Gardon (river).

This village is remarkable for its geographical location, its very coherent and little-altered habitat, the architecture of the buildings and its terraced developments built up to the mountain peaks, make Saint André a typical village of this part of the Cévennes.
The architectural unity preserved to this day allows us to position this village as a witness to the flourishing era of Cévennes villages sustained by sericulture.
It is a wonderful constructed landscape where the unique stone, schist, a resource extracted from the soil, is used for all the necessary developments to cultivate, build and protect the habitat.
The village discovery trail is accessible to all... The narrow streets of old St André, its cobbled lanes, its fountains, the river... Its beautiful bourgeois houses, the silk mills... a heritage centered around water.
Visit the 12th-century Romanesque church, which is made of flat schist and pebbles, renovated in 1980.
Take a break for a meal or a coffee under the plane trees, or simply refresh yourself at the fountains. In summer, dip your toes in the water at the waterfall known as the Fairy Rock... 800m from the village on the road to Pompidou, and for younger visitors, the charming Loulette area just below the stadium (parking available), also accessible via Vignelongue (on foot).

- Old Bridge from the 11th century, the temple is from 1826, our Romanesque church from the 12th century, the fortified house from the 16th century.

- Listen to the story Bernadette Lafont tells about the Camisards of the Valley... The population having embraced the Reformation, tensions arose. Occupied by royal troops, it became a garrison village where battles took place between the Camisards of Castanet and their persecutors.

- Several private castles in the surrounding area that are not open to the public: Château des Barbuts, Château du Folhaquier, Château de la Fare, Château de Nogaret.
