Happiness Valley Trail
Saint-Sauveur-Camprieu
In the Middle Ages and until 1870, the very Catholic village of Camprieu had neither a church nor a cemetery. The inhabitants would go to the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, along the path of the dead, to transport their deceased to the cemetery.
The coffin was carried by the men; at each of the designated resting places, the "De Profundis" was recited. The priest of Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils met the procession at a spot marked by a stone cross, where he gave the blessing. Saint-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, which belongs to the National Forestry Office, is one of the starting points for the arboretum known as the Tree and Shrub Trail. On the return journey, one can admire the resurgence of the Bonheur River at the Bramabiau Abyss, and further upstream, the Bonheur River's disappearance.
Points of interest: the underground river and the story of Edouard-Alfred Martel, the abandoned Boissière, the church of St-Sauveur-des-Pourcils, the arboretum, the legend of the robin and the evergreen fir trees...
