Surprised not to see a full-page video, a weather widget, or ultra-dynamic animations on every page of the homepage? That's normal, our site has been eco-designed.
Eco-design aims to consider the environmental impact of websites. Through numerous practices, a website's impact can be significantly reduced. These factors are detailed in the book "Eco-design for the web: 115 best practices", by Frédéric Bordage. The web agency Mill was therefore asked to respect these 115 principles in their entirety.
Eco-design rests on 3 main pillars:
A simple and clean design, adapted to the web, was chosen at the expense of animations that consume too many resources.
To limit the number of pages "scanned", information is easily found; one of the major features of the website is the search engine which will search through all the pages of the website for the keyword(s) you are looking for.
We have also opted for a "visual simplicity"; 3 colors are present on the website and you will not find full-page photos as is commonly seen on tourist websites.
One of the most important aspects of eco-design lies in website hosting, where the site's data will be continuously stored. That's why we chose an alternative web hosting provider: Infomaniak. The data centers are located in Switzerland and optimized to minimize their energy demand.
Photos and other media are cropped and reworked by us before being integrated into the website's media library using as little storage as possible.
To reduce the environmental impact of our website, we have chosen to remove several features, such as interactive chat, a weather module, and geolocation. This minimizes the number of requests sent to servers external to our website.
On our search engine, assisted input has been implemented as an alternative to "auto-completion".
