On the border of the Gard and Aveyron departments, Dourbies is certainly the most Cévennes-like of the communes on the Aigoual plateau. Dourbies has recently been awarded the "village of character of the Gard" label.

Thatched roofs are an architectural tradition in the Dourbies Valley. Rye thrives in these granite and siliceous soils. This cereal once provided mountain communities with animal bedding and a raw material – thatch – for roofing. Now disappearing, thatched roofs are the subject of a current restoration project. Thatched houses can still be seen in the hamlet of Les Laupiettes and at La Borie du Pont.
