Cyclosport Area of the Aigoual Massif:
Day 1: Starting from L'Espérou or St Sauveur Camprieu, the route begins gently, as the first significant climb doesn't arrive until kilometer 65! After Lanuéjols, you'll cross the stunning Causse Noir plateau before descending into the Aveyron region towards the village of Le Rozier. Next, enter the majestic Tarn Gorges, which you can admire for almost 20 km, passing through Les Vignes and then La Malène. From this village, the climb begins onto the Causse Méjean plateau, an iconic site that will take you through the village of La Parade and past the Dargilan cave. The descent to Meyrueis offers a beautiful view of the Aven Armand cave and the sublime Jonte Gorges! This first day ends with more descent than ascent... Note: It's possible to shorten the route to less than 70 km by following the Jonte Gorges up to Meyrueis from Les Rozier.
Day 2: The Aigoual loop continues with the famous Col du Perjuret and its descent steeped in Tour de France history. We then pass through the charming villages of Vanels and Vebron before tackling the second pass, the Col de Solpérière, to reach the Cévennes ridge with a beautiful descent towards St-André-de-Valborgne via Le Pompidou. The third challenge of the day, the Col du Salidès, leads to the star of these four days, the summit of Mont Aigoual (1567m). The day ends with a fairly wide and safe 30km descent to Valleraugue. Note: It's possible to shorten the day to approximately 70km by turning towards Valleraugue at St-André-de-Valborgne via the Col du Pas.
Day 3: The third stage begins with the Col du Pas and its beautiful southern exposure, best enjoyed early in the morning during the summer. Next comes the "Cévennes rollercoaster" with the descent towards Saumane via Les Plantiers, then Lasalle, passing through L'Estrechure and the Col du Mercou. The second part of the day takes you through the typical Cévennes villages of Colognac, St-Roman-de-Codières, then St-Martial, before reaching the Col de la Tribale. After a good descent and crossing the RD986, a final climb leads to St-André-de-Majencoules, before a more leisurely finish at Le Vigan. The total elevation gain is again slightly negative; this can't last until the end... Note: To shorten the route to approximately 70 km, turn off at St-Roman-de-Codières towards Sumène, then Le Vigan.
Day 4: From Le Vigan, begin the ascent towards Mont Aigoual to the Col du Minier (1264m). Then take the pretty forest road (a bit rough, so be careful) leading to the village of Dourbies. Enjoy the panoramic views of the Dourbie gorges as far as the Col de la Pierre Plantée, then turn towards the Trèves valley, to the superb perched village of Cantobre. Leaving the RD991, the road climbs towards the very beautiful village of Revens, and then allows you to traverse the Causse Noir plateau to Lanuéjols. The final leg of the journey passes through the village of Camprieu before reaching the finish line in L'Espérou. Well done! Note: It's possible to shorten the route to approximately 70 km by heading towards Camprieu from Trèves.
