A shepherdess lives between Saumane and L'Estréchure with her flock and her dogs. The Pyrenean Mountain Dog guards the flock of sheep. Here is some advice on approaching the flock and the livestock guardian dog:
At the sight of the herd
Slow down and signal your presence to the dog by speaking loudly, singing or whistling...
If you are on a bicycle, slow down and get off your bicycle
Go around the herd as wide as possible
As the dog approached
Stand still facing the dog, arms and hiking poles at your sides, avoiding at all costs looking directly into its eyes.
Give him time to identify the person and feel reassured: talk to him, adopt calming gestures (yawning...)
Remove anything that might prevent him from recognizing a human silhouette and face: rain cape, cap…
Don't hesitate to put an object or piece of clothing between yourself and the dog if you are afraid.
