Dourbies
In a superb setting, Dourbies is certainly the most Cévennes of the communes on the Aigoual plateau.
Between 700m and 1410m altitude, on foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or on skis, the Dourbies territory offers a great diversity of vegetation and landscapes,
Dourbies – which takes its name from the Gaulish river – this small village has always had a pastoral vocation. Dominated by the Suquet ridge, the territory of Dourbies offers a great diversity of vegetation and landscape.
On foot, by mountain bike, on horseback or on skis, you will be able, at the turn of a path, to realize the rich landscape, the result of centuries of agricultural and forestry work: as witnesses the centuries-old chestnut grove, the terraced crops, the pastures or the state forest.
Dourbies was awarded the "village of character" label in the Gard region in 2018, and we offer you a discovery tour to stroll through the small streets.
Our majestic church, our wash house where women used to meet, our fountains and the Dourbie river below the town.
Points of interest:
The Fountain of the Three Hermits, built in 1990, foreshadows a legend that tradition respects today through a pilgrimage to Saint-Guiral organized by the people of the surrounding towns.
Our Lady of the Assumption, a church built between 1883 and 1887 by all the inhabitants of the commune, most of them poor but animated by a deep faith, thus giving an example of solidarity.
Because of its grandeur and its architecture reaching towards the sky, imposing yet delicate, it has been called by our neighbors and the population of Dourbies: the cathedral of the Cévennes.
Lake Pises, a remarkable site, in the Cévennes National Park which has made it a space for nature protection and transhumance for the herds of the Cévennes valleys.
The Dourbie Gorges rise between 360m and 850m in altitude and include many listed sites: the perched village of Cantobre, chapels in Nant, Revens and the magnificent village of Trèves...
Explore our hiking trails and other sporting activities, becoming an explorer like Martel in the depths of caves and sinkholes: sites to visit include cliffs, ruin-like rock formations, and resurgences. Dourbies is the starting point for a scenic route along these wild gorges.
Thatched roofs are an architectural tradition in the Dourbies valley.
