The " Causses and Cévennes " territory has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, under the title "cultural landscape of Mediterranean agropastoralism". This property recognizes a thousand-year-old tradition based on the optimal use of the landscape's geological and climatic diversity for livestock farming.
Since the Middle Ages, the inhabitants have known how to exploit the natural resources of this land with its varied landscapes, such as chestnuts, orchards, and cereal crops, to feed their herds and maintain open spaces. Pastoralism, whether sedentary or transhumant, is an ancestral practice that has allowed for a harmonious coexistence between livestock farmers and nature. Today, agriculture is still present in the hamlets and villages of the site's three geographical zones: the limestone plateaus and their gorges, the schistous Cévennes, and the granite massifs of Monts Aigoual and Lozère.
